Acid Neutralizer Vs. Chemical Feed System

blog_detailsThese are the two most prescribed ways of treating acidic water in the home. You have the Acid Neutralizer tank which uses natural a limestone media to raise the PH level during water usage and you have the chemical feed or 13x54-packageinjection system which uses soda ash dissolved in water which is then injected into your water during usage or when your well pump kicks on. Me I'm not a fan of the chemical feed system and I will explain why in my review of both systems. The Acid Neutralizer is probably the most efficient most economical and the easiest way to eliminate acid water and here's why. Number one it's easy to size size is based on Ph level of your water supply and the number of people in your home. Two they are simple to install and only require maintenance every 6 to 18 months depending upon the size tank you installed and your daily water usage and your PH level. I mainly use the 13x54 tank size for most installations it has a large capacity and can serve a household of 2-8 people and can be used on ph levels from 4.0 to 6.9 and typically only needs service every 12 to 18 months. PH levels below 5.5 we recommend adding flow mag to the calcite. The chemical feed system however needs monthly maintenance by the homeowner which means you have to mix soda ash with warm water put it in the trash can like container the fill it with a garden hose and hope the mixture is correct otherwise it will not work properly. Also the correct way to set it up is with a large retention tank 80 to 120-gallon retention tank which increases the cost of the overall system and takes up a lot more room in your basement than an Acid Neutralizer does. Here in Maryland I have replaced hundreds of chemical feed systems with Acid Neutralizing tank over the years people have a hard time keeping up with the maintenance on the chemical feed system whereas with the Acid Neutralizer you install it and check the media level every six months with a bright flashlight just shine it on the tank and look to see where the shadow of the media is it's very simple. Plus the chemical feed systems are only good for ph levels of 6.0 and above and the pumps go bad and are costly to replace. An Acid Neutralizer tank will last 20 to 30 years or more with minimal maintenance which can be performed by the homeowner if need be.
